About Gangotri Dham

Gangotri Dham is situated in Gangotri a town and a Nagar Panchayat (municipality) in Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is 99 km from Uttarkashi, the main district headquarter. It is a Hindu pilgrim town on the banks of the river Bhagirathi and origin of the river Ganges. The town is located on the Greater Himalayan Range, at a height of 3,100 metres (10,200 ft). According to popular Hindu legend, Goddess Ganga descended here when Lord Shiva released the mighty river from the locks of his hair.

Gangotri Dham is one of the four sites in the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. It is also the origin of the Ganges river and seat of the goddess Ganga. The river is called Bhagirathi at the source and acquires the name Ganga (the Ganges) from Devprayag onwards where it meets the Alaknanda. The origin of the holy river is at Gaumukh, set in the Gangotri Glacier, and is a 19 km trek from Gangotri Dham. The original Gangotri Temple was built by the Nepalese general Amar Singh Thapa. The temple is closed from Diwali day every year and is reopened on Akshaya Tritiya. During this time, the idol of the goddess is kept at Mukhba village, near Harsil. Ritual duties of the temple are supervised by the Semwal family of pujaris. These pujaris hail from Mukhba village.

Gangotri Dham and Yamunotri Dham Glaciers are considered as one of the toughest treks in the Himalayan region. These treks are mostly taken during summer and range from moderate to tough in difficulty rating.
 

Gangotri dham is the highest temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The holy River Ganges originates from the Gangotri glacier, located here, and is called Bhagirathi. The main attraction in Gangotri is the Gangotri Temple, where Goddess Ganga is worshipped. A 20-ft-high structure, the exquisite temple is made with white granite

Gangotri Glacier originates at the northern pole of the Chaukhamba mountain range. It is one of the largest glaciers in India and the source of the holy Ganga River. The terminus of the glacier is Gaumukh which is a popular trekking point from Gangotri dham.The sacred temple and the surroundings offer a scenic view of the breathtaking Himalayas and the ever-so-gorgeous River Ganga.  In gangotri Dham route Harshil is main place or gaon to see for apple garden because their down tampreture harshil is main a vally for their height and apples .

Surya Kund is a spectacular waterfall in Gangotri, located 500 metres from the Gangotri Temple. A rainbow is created every time water falls down into the kund while the sun is shining. The best time to visit Surya Kund is during the morning.
